History and Cheese steaks!

At times, as a travel writer, with a corporate career, business trips turn into awesome opportunities for a writing adventure!  Enter Philadelphia, PA…Originally our nation’s first Capitol. “Philly” , was the site of numerous historic events, and home to our many historical forefathers,  who shaped and defined the history and culture of America!

Prior to this day trip, I was advised I’d be headed to the “city of brotherly love”, for a corporate job promotion interview! My first thought was, I’d wiz into town, ace the interview then return to DC. Quick and simple ! A careful review of my itinerary, revealed 9 free hours before my return flight! My travel writer radar kicked into high gear! After a few hours of research, a pocket map, camera and a small backpack with comfy walking shoes, I was packed and ready for takeoff!

The interview was a breeze! Like a reunion of old friends!! I managed to gather great city insider tips for my after noon rendezvous!

First stop, Independence National Historic Park! Site of the historic liberty bell, and Independence Hall! With hubby in tow, we hopped on the city train located directly outside the airport!

Philly boasts one of the top 5 public  systems in the U.S., so I found it bizarre that the train accepts cash only, with outdated paper punch tickets! The conductors actually carry cash, come on and off at each stop to collect fares, answer questions, change the train sign and verbally announce each stop ! No electronic ticketing, no debit and no credit cards! While very economical, $12 pp for unlimited rides, on a 24hour pass,  be prepared with cash in hand! Pay attention to announcements so you don’t miss your stop! Trains are neat, spacious and surprisingly clean. Although they crawl the track at a snail’s pace, their large windows allow you the opportunity to take in all the colorful graffiti and city skyline along the route!

Arriving at the entry of Independence Park, we were greeted by National Park Rangers! Full of smiles and information, they informed us, we arrived in the midst of the National Park Rangers 100 year birthday celebration! The park was bustling with tons of festivities, tours, food, reenactments, and music!

A guided liberty bell tour, gave great insight as to what the liberty bell truly represents. Life, Liberty, freedom, and justice for all!  In its day, when the bell rang out , it signaled hope, change, justice, and the possibility of equality and freedom for all!

Walking through Independence Park, the Rangers handed visitors U.S flags and cupcakes!  Strolling the park grounds, the nostalgia of an earlier Era comes to life! Cobblestone walkways, brick streets and massive oak trees from the 1700s, speak to your spirit!

Located south of the park sits the beautiful tourist center. The artistic, creative exhibits inside capture your imagination and paint a vivid picture! The underground railroad exhibit provokes one to imagine life as a slave, making a way thru the depths of the underground railroad , on the run, and in search of a better life of freedom! Freedom, a basic human right, denied to the thousands of slaves who constructed most of the surrounding architecture! Slavery itself was in stark contrast and a dark reality to what the Liberty Bell, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution represented.

In the tourist center you can grab your free tickets to Independence Hall. This historic well-preserved building is where our countries first leaders came together to declare independence, establish the first states, and ultimately create,  and sign the Declaration of independence, and Constitution!

The need for an after pickup set in. We spotted a swanky little coffee shop across the street. As we approached Le Colombo coffee and tea shop, the alluring smell of fresh coffee beans, tea and espresso drew us in! The selection is extensive.  From simple, to flavored, espresso, coffees,  and teas. There are fresh pastries ranging from bagels to flaky, French delicacies! Our barista gave impeccable service, and answered all our questions in regards  the choices. He even allowed us to sample a few, to aid in making a perfect choice!

Next, a 5 minute stroll to the Park Ranger guided tour of Independence Hall! This centuries old building includes the original courthouse, furnishings, and oil paintings! There is a magnificent crystal chandelier hanging at the grand entry, which dates back to the early 1700s! The grandeur and preservation of this building makes one proud to be an American!

Time for a break, we spotted the perfect cocktail lounge.  Just a few steps away, The Red Owl Tavern with its industrial design, moderately priced menu and massive colonial style bar it’s  the perfect sit down spot! Our server Corinne, suggested  tropical rum cocktails and craft beers! Following her lead, we departed extremely pleased with her suggestions,  and hospitality!

Located next door, are the Bourse Food Court and Souvenir Shops. This turn of the century, Victorian style building is packed with nifty shops, and local eateries. Here, you can indulge in an original Philly cheese steak, complete with your choice of toppings! Chicken or steak, a huge variety of veggies, and loads of cheese on top of a freshly baked, toasted bun! Go for it like a local and opt for the creamy Cheese Wiz topping! You won’t regret it!

As the business day comes to a close, the city streets grow crowded. Locals head into the beer gardens, and taverns that line the city streets! The Happy hours in full swing, and the live jazz bands in nearby parks reflect the diverse culture this city is known for! As locals move about in their business attire and sneakers, one could feel the change of energy in the now bustling city streets!

Making our way through city center, taking in the sights, sounds and activity, we arrive at Chinatown! The smell of bubble tea and garlicky Chinese food take over your senses. I’m sure somewhere nestled between the take out spots and many massage parlors one could find yourself a great foot massage or mani, pedi spot to frequent!

Headed back to the airport we decided to use South 12th Street and Jefferson station. Here you will find several options for double-decker bus tours. More commonly known as the “hop on, hop off bus tours”, they are a great option for touring any city, where available!

For me, the “gypsy girl”, my preference is one of adventure, exploring, seeking and finding! ANY travel choice is a great one! Just get up, get out and see this beautiful world God placed you in! Happy travels!
